what is the basic difference between oncogene and tumor suppressor gene?

  • Posted 8 years ago

One of the main difference between oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes is that oncogenes result from the activation of proto-oncogenes, but tumor suppressor genes cause cancer when they are inactivated .

*Oncogenes promote cancer when overactive or mutated.
*Tumor suppressor genes prevent cancer when functioning properly, but contribute to cancer when inactivated or mutated.
    - Oncogenes are like "accelerators" that push cells to grow uncontrollably.
    - Tumor suppressor genes are like "brakes" that normally slow down cell growth and prevent cancer.
Summary: oncogenes drive cancer development by promoting excessive cell growth, while tumor suppressor genes prevent cancer by regulating cell growth and division.
