HerA is an ATPase/ helicase that is required for homology-mediated DNA double-strand break repair in the three domains of life. The exo-endonucleases NurA and HerA collaborate with the highly conserved Mre11-Rad50 complex in hyperthermophilic archaea to coordinate the repair of double-stranded DNA breaks. Archaeal HerA is a homo hexameric assembly having a conserved DNA binding domain.
